Frootie Loopie

What is it with children's cereal?

When I was little we had like four kinds of cereal we could choose from--besides all the "flakie types" that all kids loved to hate. There was, as I remember, ONE kind of Cheerios, ONE kind of Froot Loops, ONE marshmallow cereal which was Lucky Charms (my brother and I were only allowed to have this special treat in the summer months when we were out of school) , etc.

Why do we have to have all this junk cereal now for kids? And just to point out, the trend certainly does not stop with cereal. There are multiple choices of everything now, I even get bewildered searching for the old stand-by flavor of something. I saw a commercial a few minutes ago that was for Fruit-smoothie Froot Loops. What? Sugar-Coated sugar rings? That doesn't even sound good, not to mention the amount of sugar in one bowl. "Here, have a bowl of hyperactivity with your toast this morning, son."

Some cereals have upwards of 15 grams of sugar for 8 ounces of cereal; some worse than that. There are at least five kinds of Cheerios, bunches and bunches of marshmallow cereal, everything has a chocolate-coated option, and we wonder why our children can't sit still. "He sure was bouncing off the wall today!" Well, how many ounces of Fruit-smoothie cereal did ya feed the kid?
Heck, now we can even get the sugary concoction minus the bowl, "to-go" in the form of a prepackaged, preservative-rich "energy bar". Take a dose of that without milk. A no-brainer--literally.

I know.

I find myself in sensory overload just looking at the vast number of cereal choices in the supermarket.

Sing it, Sister! (in other words, I agree!)

My husband tried to cash in on the Disney Princesses on the box of what amounted to cornflakes, but the May Queen wasn't having it. Not enough sugar, I presume. We try to stick with the less sugary options, like cheerios and such, but it doesn't always work. Another reason why I prefer to shop alone.

Captain Crunch cuts the roof of your mouth. Not that we'd know, cuz mom never let us eat it..

Growing up we were only allowed the less sugary stuff, cheerios, cornflakes, rice krispies, chex etc. but at Gramma's house she would buy us Lucky Charms. Oh we thought it was Manna from Heaven. Now I like old people cereal, the grainier/nuttier the better. My teenager does eat the really gross stuff which I buy for him, but no one else in our house eats cereal at all with the exception of the little ones and cheerios.

You are so right about the choices though. It makes it hard to shop with the kids because it takes so long to weed through them all.

Laughing out loud! I like your humor but you're absolutely right ... but hey, did you have a look at shelves with pet food? You'd get knocked off your feet (and I don't have a pet!) - 2 full rows of it in every flavor, my God! Truly dogs and cats are superior to humans ... LOL

Mmmmmm....This post made me hungry for my very favorite sugar-laden cereal: Qwisp.

Though, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if it even still exists.

Qwisp? Never heard of it...but sounds like a keeper.

Yeah. And I'm the crunchy meanie who only buys plain Cheerios, or Rice Krispies, or Crispix. And no sugar added at the table. Though sometimes she gets a sprinkling of homemade granola on top - yes, cereal on cereal.

In many things there are just too many choices.

PS - I think Quisp is still around, but sort of undercover: http://www.quisp.com/buyquisp/index.html

Sometimes, I really wish I could go in the US just to buy grocery...

Cereal choices are very limited here in Japan (which makes me kind of sad), that I always ended up buying Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and Cocoa Krispies...

We're pretty skimpy with cereal around here - I consider it over-priced and so I don't buy it.
I'm the least fun mom ever! yay for me!
