In which my 9 year old beat me

In a race that is!
You know you are getting on up there when your 9 y.o. son can beat you in a foot race across a small parking lot!

"Mom?"

"yes, Jacob?"

"Wanna race?"

"sure, buddy..." (thinking that I will run slowly and let him win)

Yeah, right. It didn't quite work out that way.

Not only did my son win the first race, in which I started off slowly and rapidly realized that I needed to actually RUN. But, he won by a LARGE distance the second race in which I ran as hard and fast as my thirty-something body would allow.

Puts things into perspective..I still hurt and that was two days ago...

Your age is marked by the way you feel and run!

I have a Jacob, too! And racing is BIG over here (I lose, too ;))

That must be one fast kid.

Oh, yeah...I'm realising that it won't be long before my little one outruns me, and she's 2.5. Now THAT's sad. Can I fall back on the excuse that I've always been more of an endurance athlete than a sprinter?

At 35 -- just wait until he is 17, then see how you feel. Soon you realize that not only can he out run me, but he is now taller and stronger than I.

Love your blog!

Wow sis. I'm not sure whether to be proud of my speedy little nephew or disappointed in my big sister. This must be a little bittersweet for you. Next time tye his shoelaces together.

My 6 year old is *almost* to that point... I no longer can run slowly but if I sprint, I can beat him. Barely. And I consider myself in good shape!! ;) Oh well... I bet that made him feel awful proud of his running capacity. Perhaps a future track n field star is amoung us? I'd count my blessings if that happened here... football scares the living daylights out of me...

I suspect when my boys are 9, they'll be faster than me, too. Heck, they'll probably be faster than me by the time they're 5!
